From elderly customers who need help taking their shopping to their car, those who want to ensure their parents are getting a nutritious home cooked ready-meal, to the busy family seeking a quick and delicious dinner solution without compromising on taste or health, we are here to help improve our community’s well being and lives through quality local produce.

Our story

In 2007, Annabel (Bel) Forbes was looking to open a coffee shop in the village of Edzell, Scotland, where she could bake cakes that she could sell. The only space available on the high street at the time was a wholesale butcher’s shop that was up for sale.
With a background in nursing and catering, and a love for home cooking instilled in her by her mother, Bel decided to take on the existing wholesale butchers and continue the business as it was, serving more to the public than as a wholesaler alone.
I remember many people doubted me in the beginning when I took over the butcher shop, as it is traditionally seen as a male-dominated industry. But I see it as a people-person job. Like with nursing, a job I also loved, it is about the people you interact with - improving their lives for the better through quality.

As the business grew, Bel focused on developing the butchers into a community retail shop that supplied local residents, restaurants and hotels with some of the best local produce available. In 2014, Bel opened her second shop in Montrose, expanding access to her local Angus community, and now serving farther afield through our online butchers.

Coming full circle, Bel and her team sell delicious cakes and home-baked goods in both shops that are made in their Edzell kitchen. Through her drive, determination and passion for quality produce, Bel has developed Bel’s Butchers into the successful, award-winning staple in the Angus community it is today.

Food is so vital, it is one of the most important things in life – not only for your health but for family life. Food brings people together, whether sitting around a table, cooking together and teaching your children how to cook, just as our parents showed us.

Provenance & Traceability

There is just something about Scottish meat that can’t be beaten. It’s the way in which our cows, pigs and lambs are brought up, ensuring the highest of welfare standards that ensures quality, which is paramount to us here at Bel’s.

By partnering with local farmers who share our dedication to sustainable and ethical practices, we contribute to the vibrant agricultural community that surrounds us and allow our customers to know where their food comes from.
